Lip Sync Measurement

Recently there has been a lot of concern over the problem of “Lip Sync” in a Digital Television signal. Indeed, SMPTE has even created a special committee to address the problem (S22-Lip Sync Evaluation Committee). The causes are many, but lip sync measurement solutions are hard to find. Now K-WILL Corporationís QuMax-2000 can solve this problem through lip sync monitoring. K-WIll Lip Sync Measurement is covered by Japanese and U.S. patents, issued and pending.

There are several areas in a transmission chain where lip sync can end up drifting by several frames. The human studies conducted for sensitivity to lip sync have shown that a drift where the audio is late is not as annoying as the audio arriving early. In fact even a few frames of early audio are quickly detected by the viewer. The QuMax-2000 from K-WILL Corporation can now detect lip sync measurement errors by comparing the original outbound signal with what is being received at different points throughout the transmission chain. This allows the broadcaster to make several Lip Sync measurements to see where the audio and video start to drift from each other. K-WILL’s QuMax-2000 can tell how far off lip sync has drifted, down to the 1/8 field level(2ms fps 59.94Hz world and 2.5ms fps 50Hz world) through this lip sync evaluation.

Since K-WILL’s QuMax-2000 has room for up to 12 input boards, it allows for several samples to be taken along the way during a lip sync measurement. K-WILL has devised a way to do real-time lip sync measurement without injecting a potentially corrupting marker. This clean process leaves the original undisturbed and also allows for other video quality measurements such as freeze frames, blackouts and slice errors to be made along with lip sync evaluation.
