The DSCQS to replace human eyes
Since its establishment in 1999, the company has made commercially practical devices, PQA: Picture Quality Analyzer, that measure “DSCQS” quality degradation by comparing a reference video before compression and a degraded video after compression. The company has also achieved big sales with domestic TV stations and DirecTV in North America.
DSCQS stands for Double Stimulus Continuous Quality Scale. It is an ITU scale of 0 -100 based on studies with human observers who watched and participated in video quality measurement from two sources. One showed the video without any transmission errors (i.e. the reference, or source material), the other showed the same video material after alteration by transmission errors. The observers assessed the video quality by direct comparison, evaluating the quality of the video by moving the slider of a handheld voting device.
While DSCQS provides a good index for video quality evaluation, this method requires not only a special testing room, monitors, and video editing but also a panel of 15 or more human observers. Inevitably, this type of testing has various limitations such as the inability to reproduce consistent results and conduct "real-time" video quality evaluation as well as the difficulty in conducting extended testing. With K-WILL's technology it becomes easy to automate this process by the PQA.
The company’s achievements in pioneering development of a measuring equipment have been acknowledged, and the company has received the Emmy from the National Academy and was recognized as an international standard of ITU J.144.
Total Quality Control in the Contents Value Chain
In the Contents Value Chain, which ranges from media content production to ultimately the homes of viewers, digital-specific noise, that is, the sudden blocking noise or audio noise or video & audio impairment, occurs, which can cause a large degree of stress for the viewers, which in turn can cause headaches for each player involved.
If there were a solution to accurately detect these types of noise, it would be possible to specify and repair the source of the problem(s) and systematically aid in the notification and response to the viewers, and as such, would make it possible to significantly improve operational efficiency of the broadcast service.
K-WILL’s mission is to provide PQM: Picture Quality Monitoring solutions throughout the entire Contents Value Chain.
PQM and PQA
PQM core technology “Noise Detection Filter”
DSCQS by PQA is a very accurate continuous quality scale comparing with an original video. On the other hand, “Noise Detection Filter” does not require an original video & audio. With this filter, it is possible to accurately detect digital-specific noise that causes video & audio problems.
